Developing a brand name and identity for a bathhouse designed to evolve. The concept stems from Japanese and Turkish bathing culture, offering dry floatation and over time, rooms to stay, product and future locations.

Heya is “room” in Japanese. It is also a casual and friendly way of saying hello or hi! Giving off a warm, laid-back vibe, like greeting someone you’re familiar with and comfortable around.

Historical forms of Radical 75 or radical tree (木), meaning "tree" in Japanese, one of the 34 Kangxi radicals. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_75)

The logo was initially inspired by an asterisk, symbolising prefixes that could be added to Heya, such as bed, bath or steam. The site, located in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, was formerly an old stamp press. This led us to explore Kanji symbols and markings, where the character for “tree” (木) stood out as a symmetrical five-pointed graphic.

Trees hold deep cultural, spiritual and seasonal significance in Japan and around the world. Drawing from the history of this symbol, we developed a mark that conveys growth and strength. It also subtly resembles a human figure, evoking tribal energy and a sense of connection.
